Skodsborg’s royal history

Skodsborg’s recent history began with Frederik VII and Countess Danner’s stay at Skodsborg. Frederik VII purchased the country estate “Skodsborg” in 1852. Until the King’s death in 1863, the royal couple stayed here every summer. The King preferred to live in a tent in the garden whilst Countess Danner lived in the Palace.

Minister of State meetings, gatherings and banquets were held at Villa Rex which was built in 1857. After the death of Frederik VII, Skodsborg remained in Countess Danner’s possession until her death in 1874.

In 1878 the merchant Louis Meyer took over Villa Rex which he then renovated and extended to its present form. Villa Rex has since then, been renovated once more and the State Meeting Hall –  now known as The King’s Hall – has been restored using the old sketches with colours and interiors of the 1800’s and therefore appears as it did then. Villa Rex is used for meetings, conferences and festive functions.

At the highest point in the area around Skodsborg Health Centre you will find The Grotto. The Grotto is probably the most peculiar building erected during Frederik VII’s time at Skodsborg. Villa Rex, Countess Danner’s Palace and The Grotto are historical monuments.
